Archdiocese of Douala in search of funds for developmental projects
The Archdiocese of Douala needs an estimated FCFA 300 million to complete some health and educational projects that have been undertaken by the Archbishop of Douala, His Eminence Christian Cardinal Tumi.
his was disclosed during a press conference granted in Douala on Monday, December 9, by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese Mgr Paul Nyaga, who was accompanied by the some members of the Organising Committee. The fund raising exercise, the Vicar General disclosed, is expected to last 3 months.
Mgr Paul Nyaga explained that the funds raised will be used to construct new schools and hospitals and refurbish existing dilapidated health and educational infrastructures.
He also revealed that the Our Lady of Love Clinic in Logpom and the St Albert Legrand Clinic in Bonabéri have been upgraded to hospitals. As a result, he said funds were urgently needed to equip these hospitals.
The Vicar General said Catholic hospitals remain the most affordable in the country and one of the few health institutions where the poor and the destitute are treated free of charge.
He revealed that there are fifteen (15) health units within the Archdiocese of Douala, seven (7) of which belong to the Archdiocese. He clarified that although the management of the other eight (8) is not the direct responsibility of the Archdiocese, the Diocesan Health Coordination Committee, however, supervises their activities.
The Catholic Church is presently the second major partner in the educational field in Cameroon after the Cameroon government. The Douala Archdiocese has 13 schools, 8 of which belong to the Archdiocese. As is the case with hospitals, other schools not directly managed by the archdiocese are supervised by the Catholic Diocesan Education Secretary, Mgr Paul Nyaga emphasised.
Despite the enormous contribution the Catholic Church is making to the education of Cameroonians, the State has repeatedly failed to pay subventions to Catholic or other private schools in time. When these subventions are occasionally paid, they come too little, too late. Mgr Paul Nyaga noted that although a lot had already been done in the health and educational domains by the Douala Archdiocese, a lot is still pending. He cited the brilliant results obtained in end of course certificate examinations by some Catholic colleges in the archdiocese like the Our Lady of Nations College, Yassa, College Liberman and College de la Salle as proof of the Church's determination in providing quality education to Cameroonians.
The Vicar General explained that although the preaching of the Word of God is the principal mission of the Church, "the Church needs to take care of the integral development of man by taking care of his spiritual as well as material needs."
The fundraising exercise which is already going on in various parishes, he pointed out, will culminate in a grand fund raising event scheduled to take place on February 15,
